Our Story
While in clinical practice and attempting to route out the causes of injury for over 26 years, I often marvel at how little we are taught about spinal care and body mechanics. I wanted to create a curriculum that could be adapted for high school students, but in the course of research, I was surprised to learn of the magnitude of back pain cases beginning much earlier, often in middle and lower school! The following info was my call to Action:
Speaking of Epidemics!! …
A third of children and adolescents in the US have back and neck pain, highlighting the need to intervene early with preventative efforts. Statistics show that chronic back pain starting at a young age will often continue through adulthood and develop into ongoing disability.
Holy Bold Font Batman! What a Staggering Statistic! What this meant was that in order to reach these younger kids, I had to decrease the seriousness and up the silliness.
It makes sense. Why wait until pain arises before proper body mechanics are instituted? Good habits like brushing and flossing teeth are likely to last when begun early. Hopefully, good spinal hygene while sitting, sleeping, bending and lifting, are more likely to last when begun early also. Through the books, videos, and the web platform that we offer, we can teach great body mechanics in a fun and memorable way, and serve as a foundation and resource for learning and habit formation from childhood through adulthood.
